Movement for Actors

By the end of the series, actors will have a practical, embodied framework for using movement as a conscious and repeatable performance tool.

Three Expressive Clowns

Description

Movement for Actors is a 12-session workshop series designed to help performers understand and use movement as a primary storytelling tool on stage. Grounded in kinesics (body language) and movement-first performance principles, this series breaks down the physical components of behavior—posture, gesture, spatial relationship, rhythm, and physical response—and examines how they communicate character, intention, and emotional truth.

Through guided movement exploration, practical application, and reflective discussion, actors learn to recognize their habitual movement patterns and expand their expressive range. Rather than imposing external choreography or fixed physicality, the work emphasizes awareness, choice, and embodiment—allowing movement to arise organically in response to text, circumstance, and relationship.

This series supports actors in developing performances that are physically specific, emotionally grounded, and consistently truthful—using the body as a reliable source of information rather than an afterthought.

Objectives

Participants will:

  • Develop an understanding of kinesics as a tool for character development and storytelling

  • Increase awareness of personal movement habits and physical responses

  • Expand physical expressiveness while maintaining authenticity and clarity

  • Practice integrating movement with text, intention, and emotional impulse

  • Strengthen stage presence through embodied awareness and spatial intention

  • Learn to make intentional physical choices that support truthful performance
